Bicycle parking is to be installed in over 30 schools across Fife in a bid to encourage more pupils and staff to cycle to school and give them a designated spot to park their bike during the school day.

The new bike storage initiative is being run by UK charity, Sustrans with funds from the Scottish Government. When complete, almost 90 per cent of Fife’s schools will have bike parking available.

Nicola Boyle, Sustrans senior project officer for school travel, commented: ”This is one of many projects our school team have been able to support across Scotland, helping Scottish schools move the nation closer to achieving the target set in the Cycling Action Plan for Scotland of 10 per cent of all journeys being made by bicycle in 2020.”

In June, Fife Council will also be inviting schools to participate in national Bike Week, and encouraging pupils to make the journey to school by bike every day that week. Getting children into the habit of cycling at a young age makes them more likely to travel actively and sustainably in the future.
