Jim, 59, said: “I started on a government run scheme, Training For Work, almost 15 years ago and they haven’t been able to get rid of me since.

“I love the charity and it’s important for me to know I’m helping the animals.”

Animal lover Irene, 63, agreed: “The best bit is knowing that you are helping sick and injured animals.

“We have a lovely team here in Kirkcaldy and as a result I have made some good friends.”

Jacqueline Brown, assistant store manager, said Irene is a “godsend” for the store as management “can count on her constantly”, while ‘book man’ Jim is “really kind” and will “turn his hand to anything”.
