Barnardo’s staff in Fife may not have taken any trophies in last weekend’s Leith Dragon Boat Race, but they did raise hundreds of pounds for the charity.

Donning fancy dress as cartoon characters the 16-strong team, known as Barnardo’s Fife Flyers, competed against 15 other teams from across Scotland.

They took to the water in a 40ft canoe-like vessel fitted with ornately carved dragon’s heads and tails, rowing in time to the beat of a drum.

Kerry Powles, the team’s captain and Project Administrator for Barnardo’s said: “We had even more fun than expected. It was such a great day and a brilliant team activity that we all thoroughly enjoyed.

“We are delighted that lots of money was raised for the 122 services that Barnardo’s Scotland provide to some of the most vulnerable children, young people and families in Scotland.”

Kerry added: “And although we didn’t win, it was definitely the taking part and having lots of laughs that counted!”
