2012 has definitely been the year of the superhero movie and you get six for the price of one here. Avengers Assemble (re-named for a UK audience so as not to confuse it with a certain 60s spy TV show) is 140 minutes of pure action, with a surprising amount of comedy in the mix. Fans of the Marvel Heroes franchise will be familiar with the story of this super-human, earth-defending bunch brought together by leader of S.H.I.E.L.D Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to fight evil. In this case, it is supervillain Loki - who just so happens to be Avenger member Thor’s brother. Loki has enlisted the help of alien race the Chitauri in order to steal the Tesseract, an ancient extra-terristrial energy source which has the potential to destroy earth and all of its inhabitants. And so the Avengers - Ironman (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) - must come to the rescue of humanity and save the world from ultimate invasion and destruction.
An absolute thrill-a-minute movie with a stunning all-star cast who are all on punchingly-good form.
