When you bring together an all star cast of some of America’s finest actors, who are all bang at the top of their game, you’re only going to be served up with a truly outstanding product.
Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for his performance in this film which tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first regiments of black soldiers, freed as slaves, to be trained to fight in the war.
The film is based on the real life letters written by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick, the regiment’s commanding officer.
After doing little more than menial work, much to the soldiers’ frustration, Shaw’s troops are eventually deployed for combat.
Following an initial success in skirmish, the regiment was put forward to lead an attack on Fort Wagner, ending in a bloody loss of life.
