PROPOSALS to develop a 160-bedroom student housing development adjacent to the East Sands beach in St Andrews have come under public scrutiny at a consultation exhibition.
Townspeople were invited to see the project submitted to Fife Council by Alumno Developments Ltd to deliver the purpose-built student accommodation and a new nursery facility at the Wonder Years Nursery site on the sea front.
The plans are for the new nursery, together with three blocks of student accommodation with a high-quality build requirement, using environmentally sustainable materials making the best use of the surrounding landscape, coastal position and context.
The layout of the site, which has been planned with careful and sensitive consideration to the topography of the land, will feature improved pedestrian and traffic flows.
A key element of the proposals is enhanced landscaping features and a pedestrian link to the Fife Coastal Path.
If given the green light, the nursery, which occupies the intended site, would be rebuilt as part of the student accommodation scheme.
The nursery would be relocated to the eastern extent of the site and designed to deliver a modern, purpose-built facility, with an outdoor play space as a priority.
Alumno managing director, David Campbell, told the Citizen: “We were very encouraged by the amount of people who came to the exhibition and showed an interest in the proposal. There was a lot of positive feedback.
“The quality and approach of the design is of a very high standard and pays particular attention to its coastal location.
“The proposal to redevelop the site will not only deliver exceptional student housing, but a modern and fit-for-purpose nursery that will provide local residents with a multi-use site which will be a real asset for the community.”
