Rental costs blamed as business quits centre
The popular Cafe Lyon situated in the Kingdom Shopping Centre in Glenrothes has served up its last cappuccino after 15 years in the town.
The outlet has proved a popular meeting place for the town’s shoppers since it opened in 1998.
But staff served their final lunchtime meals when it closed on December 31.
A spokesman for owners Pentland Foods Ltd blamed high rental costs set up by the centre’s previous owners CIS/AXA for their decision to cease trading.
They told the Gazette: “We were not able to successfully renegotiate the rent cost for the space which is in the region of £48,000 per year.
“There are new centre owners but that has come too late for us and the decision to pull out was already made.”
The closure leaves the Albany Gate end of the mall with no cafe space, though the centre’s new owners are hopeful of securing a replacement tenant to take on the cafe space in the coming weeks.
