Kirkcaldy’s brand new leisure centre is to shut over the Christmas holidays.
Instead locals have to travel to Dunfermline or Glenrothes if they fancy a swim or use a games hall.
The Esplanade centre only opened a few months ago after a £15m development.
The Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre in Glenrothes or the Carnegie Leisure Centre in Dunfermline will both be open for four days between December 28 and December 31.
A spokesman for Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, which looks after the centre, said, since it took over it kept two centres open between Christmas and New Year.
He said geographically, it was decided the best way to provide access to leisure facilities for people in Central, north east and west Fife was to have those two particular facilities open.
The spokesman said: “Rather than close all leisure centres over the festive period, we have has a policy of providing at least two leisure facilities during the Christmas and New Year period.
“This is based on customer demand and the requirement to provide equitable, accessible facilities for all communities.
“This year, we will open Carnegie Leisure Centre, and Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre.
‘‘Both centres cover a broad range of facilities to suit a range of users.
“All festive opening hours are widely communicated to customers so that they can continue to enjoy our facilities.”
Kirkcaldy’s new centre, which only opened at the end of September, will remain closed during the holiday break.
