The countdown is on until the annual festive lights switch-on, which will form part of the St Andrew’s Day Celebrations on November 30.

And helping add some extra sparkle have been guests who have stayed at a St Andrews hotel this year.

Rufflets Country House Hotel is the top supporter of the Brighter St Andrews charitable fund, having donated more than £5000 since 2011.

In the latest boost, the hotel’s guests had donated more than £2100 this year and it was decided to give it to the 2014 festive lights initiative.

The hotel was the setting this week for Rufflets to hand over a cheque to Jim McArthur, chairman of St Andrews Partnership, which now has responsibility for the town’s lighting displays.

Rufflets General Manager Stephen Owen said: “Rufflets Hotel is delighted to have helped raise money for such a good local cause.

“Rufflets’ guests love St Andrews, and we are sure they will be pleased to know that their donations are helping to bring colour and light to the town during the darkest few weeks of the year.

“We’re all now looking forward to the lights switch-on on St Andrew’s Day.”

Mr McArthur said: “The contributions made by Rufflets’ generous guests have allowed us to further expand our festive lighting plans, after a successful first year in 2013.

“We are very grateful both to these visitors and to the hotel’s staff for administering all the donations.

“St Andrews is now set to sparkle brighter than ever this festive season.“

The Festive Lights Switch-On will be adding to the fun and excitement of the St Andrew’s Day Celebrations event taking place in South Street from 2-7.30pm on November 30.

The celebrations, headlined by Eddi Reader and her band, will include music, dance, a mass-participation ceilidh and more.

The lights switch-on is scheduled to take place at approximately 5.45pm.

The St Andrews Festive Lights will stay on until January 5.

Other support has come from Fife Council, StayinStAndrews, St Andrews Links Trust and private individuals and businesses but further donations are welcome and can be made via /mydonate.bt.com/charities/brighterstandrews
