A group of Fife fitness fanatics have joined forces to raise money for good causes whilst encouraging others to get active at the same time.
FIFURZ is a new fundraising charity group made up of 22 Zumba instructors from across the Kingdom and was the brainchild of Lesley Cochrane and Diane Smith, who thought that, by pulling together, the group could raise money and awareness of local causes in a more effective way.
Lesley said: “There are lots of Zumbathons that happen but they don’t raise all that much by themselves so Diane and I thought if all the instructors came together then we could raise a lot more as a group.
“We are looking for people to send us nominations. They can be for causes, groups or organisations. We will have a look at each case and then put them to the committee who will decide which one to take on.
“The only stipulation is that they must be Fife-based.”
FIFURZ first Zumbathon will be held to raise money for 18-year-old Reiss Fairbairn of Kirkcaldy.
Reiss, who lives in Links Street, suffers from the extremely rare metabolic condition Cittrulanemia which means too much protein in his body can poison him. The group want to help raise £2500 for a walker called Maywalk 2000 which will help Reiss to exercise and give him a degree of independence.
Parents, Steven and Kerry, are friends of Diane’s, and Kerry said that the walker is the only way that Reiss, a pupil at Leonard Cheshire in Dysart, can get himself upright.
“It will help build his muscles and will be really good for his health in general,” she said.
“I think what the FIFURZ group is doing is amazing and we can’t thank them enough.”
Steven added: “This is the only way that we would be able to pay for the Maywalk. Fife Council say they’ve no money for one.”
Kerry and Reiss’s 10-year-old sister Kerys are taking part in the Zumbathon for Reiss, which is happening on Saturday March 1 at Templehall Community Centre from 10.00 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. Tickets are £5 and can be bought by contacting Diane on 07792823314.
She said: “We will also be holding a silent auction of second hand Zumbawear.
“It will be a lot of fun on the day and we hope a lot of people turn up. The more the merrier!”
The group is in the process of setting up a website but can be contacted for nominations via its FIFURZ Facebook page.
