Two local teenagers are proving enterprising in their career choices.
Nicola England, from Kennoway, and Rebekah Beaton, from Leven, both 19, have just completed Scotland’s first Apprenticeship in Enterprise, receiving their awards recently from MEP Catherine Stihler.
The qualification aims to develop young people’s inner entrepreneur by helping them work alongside entrepreneurial figures in employment.
Nicola now has a crucial role as a junior executive for charity Character Scotland, working as the awards co-ordinator for its Inspire>Aspire: Global Citizens in the Making programme, which involves more than 400 schools and 50,000 students worldwide.
Participating in the project throughout Scotland, the UK and internationally, Nicola is responsible for the administration of new school applications, providing ongoing teacher support and co-ordinating the final returns and judging for the Inspire>Aspire National Awards.
By leading a major recruitment campaign, she was also central to achieving for the first time at least one school from every Scottish local authority area taking part.
Commenting on her diploma in enterprising skills, Nicola said: “It has changed the way I think in both work life and in my personal life. In my place of work, it has allowed me to think of more innovative and enterprising ways to complete tasks and fulfil the needs of customers. I feel the value of the qualification will really help me in future as it is very efficient and well-structured.”
Rebekah is now working in partnership with Fife Council’s Cultural of Enterprise as project co-ordinator for the Fife Apprenticeships in Enterprise pilot programme, which is supporting a further 19 apprentices in Fife.
Nicola and Rebekah, both former pupils at Kirkland High School, are following in the footsteps of Shannen Scott (21), originally from Anstruther, who was the first in Scotland to achieve an Apprenticeship in Enterprise award and is now a project manager running Apprenticeships in Scotland, which offers the country’s only dedicated youth job service.
