Victoria pit mosaic
The memorial mosaic and outdoor classroom in West Wemyss, created to remember those who worked at the Victoria Pit, was the brainchild of the Buckhaven Beehive, in collaboration with West Wemyss Development Trust, in 2012.
It was created as a piece of work which would engage with local school children and the wider communities, to recognise coal mining and those who worked down the mines.
The Buckhaven Beehive employed local arts workers to engage with children from Coaltown Primary School and local families to design and carry out a piece of community art.
As well as the mosaic, an outside learning space for the children to learn about their local history and heritage, as well as the wider useage as a picnic/meditation/photographic area for visitors to the area, was created with help from the Community Payback Team.
