Arnhem Memorial

The memorial to those who fought in the Battle of Arnhem was unveiled in Leven’s Festival Gardens on Sunday, September 28, 2014.

Created by Methil-born artist David Mach, the famous artist was keen to get involved because his own father, Joseph Mach, was a member of the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade.

Inscribed on the plaque, which David created from thousands of metal tacs dipped in bronze, and fixed on to the front of a massive stone are the words ‘For the men of Poland & their Allies, For Freedom, Arnhem 1944’, followed by ‘Najkrotsza Droga’ which is translated as the shortest way, the motto of the Brigade.

Alongside that are the Polish and Scottish flags, as well as the Rampant Lion and Polish Eagle.
