Big move sees facilities all under the one roof
Relationships Scotland Couples Counselling Fife has just celebrated moving into its spacious new premises in Tolbooth Street, Kirkcaldy.
With a large meeting room, several homely counselling rooms, office space, a reception area and a kitchen area, it’s a far cry from the tiny portacabin in the car park behind St Bryce Kirk which served as its home for 15 years.
And it’s a move the relationships counselling service’s manager Mieke van der Zijpp is still coming to terms with.
“It is still a novelty coming into work each day and something I really look forward to,” said the Dutch-born woman who fell in love with Scotland while at university and settled in the Lang Toun.
“It is so much nicer and more professional to come to lovely premises like this, with all the facilities under the one roof, instead of a tiny, draughty cabin where you didn’t see anyone else from the service, as they were not under the same roof. Here, you know you are part of a team and there are things going on all around you.”
Mieke initially worked as a receptionist and admin assistant with what was Relate Fife when she joined in 2006, going on to become manager in November 2012 with the departure of Jill Grant.
She is now supported by receptionist Donna Ferri, with 15 counsellors, five intake workers, five receptionists and a committee of eight volunteers, headed by Kirkcaldy sheriff Grant McCulloch, which is responsible for the decision making.
“I am responsible for the day-to-day running of the service in Fife, and, in an average week, we can have up to 30 appointments, so it’s a busy place,” she said.
“We have people coming in off the street to enquire about what we do, although the majority initially contact us by phone or online.”
At the official launch on Tuesday evening, performed by Kay Morrison, depute provost, committee members, counsellors, staff, Fife councillors and guests, toasted the service’s success.
“This building means we can expand the service and cut waiting times,” added Meike.
