All eyes will once again be on the Glenrothes ‘oche’ next month as the town prepares to welcome some of the biggest names in world darts.
The British Darts Organisation (BDO) Six Nations Cup, one of the most prestigious on the international darts calendar is to take place over three days in February at the CISWO Club.
Three-time Lakeside World Champion Martin Adams, nine-times Ladies World Champion Trina Gulliver, three-time finalist Tony O’Shea and former 2013 BDO World Champion Scott ‘Too Hotty’ Waites are all expected to be among those gracing the Glenrothes stage.
Newly crowned BDO Champion and world number one ranked player – Stephen Bunting – is also expected to be competing in the Fife spectacular.
Moria Murray from the Fife Darts Federation, which is instrumental in the organisation of the event, says that it is further proof that Glenrothes is now seen as a ‘darts destination’.
“It’s fantastic for the town and for Fife, but also for Scotland as a whole,” she told th e Gazette.
“The original event was scheduled to take place in Wales, but because it clashed with a major rugby match, a new venue was required – and because of the successful championship which was held last year in Glenrothes, they turned to us. It’s a great endorsement.
“The top six players from each of the home nations sides plus those from the Netherlands and Ireland will be here and that means spectators will be watching the very best that the sport has to offer.”
It’s a welcome return to the town which impressed the international darts authorities when it successfully hosted the BDO British Championship in April 2013.
Securing such a high-profile competition event is also further proof that the town’s CISWO Club is now regarded as one of Scotland’s formative venues on the UK darts circuit.
Retailers and hotels across the region will also be hoping for a repeat of the welcome business boost that came on the back of the competition last year.
