A GLENROTHES showpiece event has been saved at the last minute by the goodwill of the town’s people and the readers of the Gazette.
Organisers have confirmed the popular Glenrothes Road Running Festival will definitely go ahead next month on June 23, despite just a few weeks ago it looking as if it had fell at the last hurdle due to not having enough volunteer stewards to ensure competitor and spectators’ safety.
But following an appeal, featured in this newspaper, race organisers this week confirmed a “significant number” of additional volunteers have come forward to fill the void.
Ed Wallace, director of Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, one of the event’s main sponsors, and chairman of the festival’s organising committee, is overjoyed it won’t have to be cancelled for the first time in its 31 year history.
He said: “The number of those wanting to take part in this year’s event was never really in doubt, but thanks to your newspaper’s appeal we are absolutely delighted to be able to say that what was a real threat of postponement or cancellation has now been removed.
“Now we can all look forward to the 2013 Glenrothes Road Running Festival being the best yet.”
Aileen Penny, the race’s organising secretary paid tribute to those who have stepped up to save the race.
She said: “We have a core of long-standing volunteers but now these numbers have been bolstered by a whole cross-section of people, ranging from the likes of youngsters from a local swimming club to players and staff from a football team as well as like-minded individuals from all age groups right up to senior citizens.”
She added those still wanting to get involved should contact her via email@example.com.
The Road Running Festival will be extra special this year as it will start at the new Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre on Viewfield Road.
