Shoppers at three local convenience stores have helped raise over £50,000 for two charities.

The SPAR stores in Bighty Avenue, Glamis Centre, and Main Street, Thornton, took part in collecting donations for a team from the company’s Scottish stores to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Susan Hutchison, Graham Murdoch, Jamie Buchanan and John Evans climed the African mountain to help raise funds for Maggie’s Cancer Centres and for the Edinburgh Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

The four-strong team scaled the mountain in Tanzania after months of gruelling training.

The money was raised through collection buckets placed in stores throughout Fife and also via personal donations.

Jamie told the Gazette: “The fantastic work of Maggie’s and Edinburgh Sick Kids inspired us to do something out of the ordinary to raise funds for these terrific charities.

“We are completely overwhelmed by the response from our families, friends, colleagues and customers, and to raise over £50,000 gave us that extra motivation to get to the summit.”
