THE plight of orphans in Africa has spurred on a Glenrothes woman to make a life changing decision.
Council employee, Helen Millar has made the bold decision to take a two-year career brake to go and live in Tanzania and lend a helping hand in one of the country’s many orphanages.
Helen told the Gazette it was ‘now or never’ and added: “I’m 43 now and I’ve contemplated the idea of volunteering for a while, and just thought, if I don’t go now I never will, so my flight is booked for June, 14.”
Helen will work for the one of the international charities providing essential care for children and will live in a ‘home stay’ with a local family for the whole of her time there.
The 43-year-old is now hard at work raising enough funds to help the orphanage once she gets there and has already set the ball rolling with several charity events.
Helen has also set up a dedicated Facebook page called ‘Dawn’s Toe’ short for Dawn’s Tanzanian Orphanage Experience.
People can also donate online to help Helen’s effort by going to www.gofundme.com where you can donate any amount securely through paypal.
Once there Helen also plans to keep the Gazette informed of her progress.
