Fife College has welcomed an independent review of the quality of its education provision by HM Inspectors.

A report has now been published following the inspection, which took place in February, on behalf of the Scottish Further and High Education Funding Council (SFC).

The report outlines positive practice at the College as well as areas for development and action.

Overall, courses were found to meet the needs of learners and employers while most students were found to progress on to further learning, apprenticeships or employment after leaving Fife College.

The report also stated the majority of students gained confidence through their learning and during their studies. Staff were praised too and found to use their industry experience and subject knowledge well in lessons.

Special recognition was also given to excellent practice. Examples of this included the College’s links with businesses and organisations within Fife and beyond such as The Science Training School partnership between the College and NHS Lothian which is enhancing skills and qualifications in the Scottish life science sector.

An ‘Apps For Good’ project, to enable learners studying NQ Digital Media Computing courses to develop apps, was also highlighted as excellent practice.

Hugh Logan, Fife College principal, said: “It has been a difficult few years for further education in Fife as, against a backdrop of cuts in funding, we have come through a challenging merger process. It is early days and many challenges still lie ahead as we strive to improve all areas of College life for our students and partners.

“We are working hard to improve on the areas for development and action, some of which have come about as a result of the merger process, and we have introduced a number of plans and processes to achieve these aims.”

Stephen Magee, chairman of the Board of Governors at Fife College said: “The College Board welcomes this report and is confident the areas for action and development outlined are already being addressed by the College’s management team.

“I would like to thank our external partners for their continued support in helping us build positive foundations for our College. I would also like to thank the College staff for their ongoing commitment to our students and for the great work already achieved.”
