FIFERS don’t have long to wait until the new Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre in Glenrothes finally opens its doors.

The state-of-the-art facility is due to open to the public on July 22.

A wealth of superb facilities will be available for all ages and abilities including three pools – an eight lane competition standard pool, a training pool with underwater moveable floor and a teaching and remedial pool too.

But the facilities don’t end there and the new centre also offers an 80 station gym, regional standard badminton court sports hall, squash courts, synthetic turf pitches, tennis courts and an athletics track.

The Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre is the second of three facilities in Fife to be completed as part of the £55m Future of Leisure programme.

Councillor Mark Hood, executive committee member, said: “The new centre is really fantastic.

‘‘I’m sure everyone will be amazed when they walk through the doors for the first time.

“The facilities are really impressive and offer an exceptionally high standard to suit a range of different abilities from beginners to professional athletes.

“I hope Fifers of all ages will feel inspired to visit and that young people aged 17 and under will take advantage of the free swimming offer introduced as part of this year’s budget.

“We are investing in the future of leisure to encourage everyone realise their potential.”

Michael Woods Sport and Leisure Centre will be operated and managed on behalf of Fife Council by the Fife Sport and Leisure Trust.

Ed Watson, chief executive for Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, explained the full programme will be available to customers from July 29.

He said: “Staff are hard at work getting the Centre ready for doors opening on the 22 July. We are confident that the local community will be very impressed not just with the facilities, but also the quality and selection of equipment, sports and physical activity opportunities.”
