In a first for Kirkcaldy, local children have an opportunity to take part in a lantern parade spectacular to mark the advent of Christmas.

But before the captivating event takes place next month, creative kids can get busy making their Christmas lanterns in a series of workshops, starting this Saturday.

As preparations get under way, Bill Harvey, spokesperson for organiser Kirkcaldy4All said the magical seasonal sight should create a “fuzzy feeling” for participants and spectators alike.

“We are trying to stage more family orientated events on the High Street and working towards getting back to something that’s more traditional,” he commented.

More than 10 local primary schools have already jumped on board, he added.

“They will be making lanterns in school and we have lantern-making workshops in the Mercat shopping centre, where anyone can come along and join in - it’s all free,” he said.

The first workshop takes place this Saturday and is repeated on successive Saturdays until November 16.

All workshops take place in the Mercat Community Events Unit, near TK Maxx.

The actual parade takes place the following week, on Saturday, November 23, to coincide with Kirkcaldy’s Christmas light switch-on.

“All children who create a lantern will be entered into a draw and the winning entry will join panto dame Billy Mack in turning the town’s Christmas lights on,” explained Bill.

The seasonal celebration will also feature traditional Christmas carol singing.

“I expect it really will be a ‘spectacle’ and create a fuzzy feeling for everyone who takes part,” said Bill

“And next year, if this one is a success, we will try and develop it a wee bit more,” he added.

Parents are advised the lantern workshops and parade are suitable for children aged five-plus.
