Laurence Owen: Cinemusical - The Voodoo Rooms (Venue 68)

The Fringe may be drawing to a close, but there are still shows worth catching - and this is definitely one of them.

One of the true gems on the Free Fringe, you should add it to your early afternoon schedule.

It’s a one man show which is a wonderful, slick parody of those great but cliched Hollywood musicals.

Owen mocks Disney’s limited options for its princesses, wonders what would happen if a wicked queen didn’t really want to be evil, an animal sidekick who wanted to be taken seriously rather than just a cowboy’s sidekick, and a villain who was more than just muscles.

He acts ‘em all out to a glorious soundtrack which is packed with sharp, laugh-out lyrics and great tunes which are faithful to the style of all Hollywood blockbusters. Disney would love it ... well, until they heard the lyrics!

It’s a thoroughly entertaining hour of entertainment - genuinely one of the best shows I’ve seen on the Free Fringe this year.

If you’ve sat through endless viewings of ‘Frozen’ or ‘Shrek’ in the company of youngsters - and which parent hasn’t - then this show is definitely for you.

Cinemusical runs until August 30 - treat yourself to its final bow.
