ONE of Scotland’s best-known former football referees, Willie Young, and popular comedian Andy Cameron, are among the guest speakers at the forthcoming annual charity dinner organised in aid of the East Neuk Wheelchair Appeal Fund.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the group’s fund raising activities spearheaded by Eleanor Bowman, who along with her husband, Sandy, and other family members, operated the Craw’s Nest Hotel in Anstruther for many years. In 2007 she was awarded the MBE in recognition of her charity work.

A highlight of the dinner will be an auction of sporting and other memorabilia.

Among the top lots is a Manchester United signed strip and tickets for a Premier League match at Old Trafford donated by club boss Sir Alex Ferguson, a long-time friend of the Bowman family, golf for four and an overnight stay at Loch Lomond and a guitar signed by members of the top rock band Snow Patrol.

Also coming under the hammer is a signed glove and training top gifted by former world heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis.

Mrs Bowman explained:”My nephew, Ian Birrell, met the boxing legend in California recently and after hearing about our charity programme he said he would be happy to help out.”

Since its humble beginnings in 1989 when it was first launched, the group has raised over £430,000 and donated 101 powered and 29 manual wheelchairs, along with donations of many tens of thousands of pounds to various local and national causes and helped improve the quality of life for many people.

This year the charity has presented five powered wheelchairs and also medical equipment to doctors’ surgeries across the East Neuk.

Mrs Bowman, whose daughter Edith, is the well-known radio DJ and television presenter, told the Citizen,”We would like to say a big thank you to all of those people who have supported us over the years.

“Last year’s dinner was a great success with tickets selling out very quickly and we raised over £21,000.”

Other speakers at the charity event will include satirist and poet Eric Davidson and comedian Adger Brown.

The dinner will be held on November 13 in the Craw’s Nest Hotel and starts at 7.30pm.

Places can be reserved at the hotel (tel 01333 310691) or by contacting Mrs Bowman direct at 37b Pittenweem Road, Anstruther.
