OVER £1.8 million is to be spent improving roads, footpaths and street lighting in the Kirkcaldy area.

A report was presented to members of Kirkcaldy area committee recently seeking approval for £967,000 for road improvement projects in the area during 2013/14.

And a further £882,000 will also be invested to improve footpaths and street lighting in Kirkcaldy area over the same period.

As well as the planned road improvements, Fife Council is also entering the eighth year of an 11-year project to replace old street lighting columns, an investment of £40 million.

A separate lighting efficiency project also aims to replace 42,000 old street lighting bulbs with new energy-efficient ones over the next six years.

This will see 7000 bulbs being replaced in 2013/14 at a cost of £1.4 million.
