Linton Lane Centre celebrates its award of 17,000 from the Asda Foundation

A KIRKCALDY community centre received a welcome Christmas present in the shape of a large donation of cash from Asda.

Linton Lane Centre has been awarded £17,376 from the giant superstore’s Foundation in light of its importance to the local area.

It was the only award one given in Scotland this year.

Stephen Gallagher, manager of Asda Kirkcaldy, said: “We were looking for a project to try and help and it was Jean Ritchie, our events co-ordinator, who suggested we take a look at Linton Lane.

“When I saw the work they do for so many people locally, and across all age groups, I thought it would be a great project to work with.”

David Torrance MSP, who works with the Asda Foundation, welcomed the award.

He sxaid: ‘‘The centre is very supportive of community life in this area.

“Congratulations need to go to Stephen and Jean for the effort they put in and their resourcefulness in getting this award for Linton Lane. It’s always good to see one of the big superstores working with the local community.”

The cash injection comes at the end of a difficult year for the centre which began with a with a repair bill for £6,000 after a large section of the roof was ripped off during a storm in December.

Mandy Henderson, centre manager, described the windfall as “amazing” adding “There’s no way we could have raised this amount. We’re all really pleased and the people who use the centre are delighted too.

“It really means a lot that we got this award. Stephen and Jean came in and saw what we do. They know this is a worthy cause.”

A new floor will be put down in the main hall, which will also be given a fresh lick of paint via Community Payback, the meeting room will be given a complete overhaul, as will the electrics throughout the entire building - and work is expected to be completed by mid-January.

Councillor Judy Hamilton, a member of the centre’s management committee, paid tribute to the staff: “The award is recognition for the work Mandy and the team do to make the centre a hub for the local community.”
