THREE local projects have been given a green cash injection totalling £71,316.

Greener Kirkcaldy, The Sustainable Communities Initiatives and Fife Council have been awarded funding from the Central Scotland Green Network Development Fund.

Greener Kirkcaldy has been awarded £19,770 to create a new community orchard on overgrown land within Ravenscraig Walled Garden.

The Sustainable Communities Initiative has been given £5200 to help transform the Widows Land site in Burntisland into an Ecovillage and Fife Council was awarded £46,346 to support the creation of a Core Path Implementation Team by recruiting young unemployed people aged between 16 and 24.

Suzy Goodsir, project manager, Greener Kirkcaldy, said: “Our first steps will be to clear the ground ready to plant fruit trees and bushes, while preserving the wildlife on-site.

“We then plan to plant apples, pears, plums, quince, berries and even some nut trees.”

Surveys

Paula Cowie, development manager, SCI, said: “The funding will enable us to carry out woodland and habitat surveys and deliver community events to involve local people in the future management of the site.”

Peter Howden, Council parks and countryside development manager, said: “Over the course of two years up to 16 young unemployed people will be given training, while carrying out work to improve and signpost the core path network across Fife.

“The project will encourage locals and visitors to use the paths as well as providing jobs and training to help young people.”
