A CRACKING CHRISTMAS IN
After almost a year of careful planning, Cupar’s Christmas Festival springs into action tomorrow (Saturday).
In a change from previous years when the town’s Christmas lights were illuminated on a Thursday night, the event will be bigger and brighter with the switch being flicked by Santa, the town’s new citizen of the year Euan Barbour, and the Children’s Gala queen and king, on Saturday at 4.30pm.
A number of activities take place during the day beginning at 1pm with a craft fair in the Corn Exchange, a funfair in the Bonnygate car park, while visitors to St John’s Church will be able to see a reindeer and a donkey.
And, in the run up to Christmas, there will be lots of events for the community and visitors to enjoy including a Christmas concert in the Corn Exchange on Tuesday evening, a lantern procession on Sunday, December 16, and a weekend of activities with an artificial ice rink and riverside market in the Haugh Park on Saturday and Sunday, December 22 and 23.
The entire Christmas Festival has been created following some negative comments made after last year’s display when many people said they felt the town could do better.

Councillor Margaret Kennedy, who has lead the festival committee, said: “We’ve tried to involve the whole town in the planning process and, as the name suggests, it’s Cupar’s festival, so it’s important that everyone has the opportunity to voice an opinion and get involved, which we’ve done through a series of open meetings throughout the year.”
“Our aim is to improve the festival every year and there are already a number of ideas being discussed for 2013.”
A key part of this has been the involvement of the town’s independent retailers.
In previous years, local businesses have donated to the fund but not had a great deal of actual involvement. This year with the main event taking place on a Saturday afternoon and with their advertising support making it possible to promote the event more widely, they’re a core part of the festival.
“Cupar has a great selection of independent shops, many of which are perfect for finding Christmas gifts”, said Graeme Black, who’s been involved in helping to promote this year’s event. “From a festive bottle from Luvians, that elusive book for the difficult uncle from Courtyard Books; to unique gifts from the likes of Maisie & Mac, Rhubarb or Funky Rascal. Even organising a Christmas night out at Ostler’s Close or Elmwood’s Fairways Restaurant, there’s a great deal of variety to be enjoyed in Cupar.”
