A group of plucky Cupar men are planning to light up the town with a cheeky new fundraising calendar to be officially launched today (Friday).
The daring guys are hoping they haven’t hit a bum note with the idea, which aims to raise funds for Cupar’s Christmas Festival.
The calendar - called ‘Men of Cupar’ - carries the warning’Caution: Hot Stuff’and features a number of local businessmen and sportsmen as you’ve never seen them before.
Participants include Cupar Hearts, the Howe of Fife Rugby team, AM Soccer and even two funeral directors whose October appearance is captioned ‘Beware of the ghoulies.’
The revealing photos were shot in various locations throughout the town and one or two had to be given the soft focus treatment as they were thought to be just a little too racy!
The idea for a naked calendar came about after last year’s Christmas lights display, which it was felt could have been better.
“The festival committee work hard to put on the display but it’s very expensive and we felt they could do with a helping hand,” explained Wayne Melrose, who came up with the calendar idea along with his friend Ross Makein.
“It started off as a bit of fun but it was surprising how little persuasion the guys took to strip off!
“One or two of the wives and girlfriends weren’t very happy but most of them saw the funny side.
“We like to think it’s all very tasteful and the end of the day it’s to benefit the whole community.”
Each of the pages has been sponsored by businesses throughout the town and the photos were taken by Cupar photographer Calley Douglas, while the printing was done by the Print and Stationery Office, whose boss Hilary Green was so taken with the idea that she’s even persuaded her husband Gary to strip off too.
“We’d like to thank all the sponsors who’ve helped us as we couldn’t have done it without them,” said Wayne.
“We are printing 200 to begin with and if they sell well we’ll produce some more. We hope to raise around £1500 to £2000 to help with the cost of the Christmas lights.”
Scattered throughout the calendar are subtle references to the famous Cupar Christmas hoaxes that have become an integral part of the town’s festive season over the past few years.
Look out for ‘Prank’ Bruno in January, while ‘Trick’Astley pops up in March and Chesney ‘Hoax’in December.
“The mystery Christmas hoaxer has become a bit of a tradition in Cupar,” said Wayne, who’s ‘Mr December’.
“We thought it would be fun to incorporate it into the calendar.”
The calendars, which cost £8, will be on sale from today at various outlets throughout the town, including Steven Stewart Funeral Directors in Bonnygate, The Blind Company in Waterend Road and here at the Fife Herald office.
But be warned, it’s not for the faint-hearted - and that’s the bottom line.
