A toolkit for Tanzania
volunteers from the Ecology Centre in Kinghorn were delighted to say goodbye to the fruits of their labour recently.
It is preparing to send a toolkit containing 46 high-quality refurbished tools and one completely serviced and fully functioning sewing machine to a project in Turiani-Mvomero, Tanzania.
The tools, which were donated to the centre’s Tool Shed project, have been fully renovated by volunteers and will now be donated to Tools for Self Reliance which gives people in Africa the skills and tools to get them out of poverty and into work.
This is the first full consignment of tools to be sent overseas from the Ecology Centre.
Jamie Vint, Tool Shed officer, said “We are delighted to be in a position to send these much needed tools to Tanzania.
‘‘Our contribution should help to train 10 tailors and up to 25 carpenters and wood carvers, helping to create employment, increase production and income”.
The tool workshop, which has been running since March last year, has been a huge success.
Hundreds of items have been donated by local residents and businesses and refurbished for use on the site or donated to local projects and schools around Fife.
Jamie added: “We are always grateful for donations of tools, particularly carpentry or old manual Singer sewing machines as these items are in great demand.
‘‘We also welcome new volunteers to our workshops who are willing to share their skills, learn new ones and make friends along the way.”
To donate your tools or get involved in the friendly workshops please contact: Jo Hobbett, The Ecology Centre, e-mail email@example.com, tel. 01592 891567 or visit our website at www.theecologycentre.org.
Workshops currently run every Monday and Tuesday from 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. and Friday from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. There is also a specialist sewing machine workshop which takes place every other Tuesday from 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.
The tool refurbishment scheme is part of the Ecology Centre’s ‘‘enviro-mentors scheme’’ where people aged 50 and over are encouraged to learn new skills and try new activities to help improve their general health.’’
