All-night blaze puts fire crews to the test

FIRE crews from across Fife spent an entire night battling a blaze at a farm in Pittenweem, as 12,000 tonnes of grain went up in flames

The service was alerted to the fire at East Grangemuir during the afternoon of Tuesday, October 9, with engines from St Monans and St Andrews the first to arrive.

Grain which hadn’t been affected needed to be moved from the fire by tractor, while crews were attempting to get the situation under control.

Extra help was called in from Methil and Kirkcaldy, with a hydraulic ladder being used by firemen to tackle the blaze from above.

A spokesman from the fire service said: “It took some time and we were fighting the fire with the aerial ladder at around 1am.

“After that, we still had no way of removing the grain and had to start dampening down.

“We called an agricultural engineer who took out the grain at 8.47am and the last appliance returned at about 1.30pm.”
