Anglers welcome Eden improvements
LOCAL anglers have welcomed a £9.3 million investment to refurbish four waste water treatment facilities near the River Eden.
The projects are being undertaken by Scottish Water as part of its 62 million investment programme across Fife.
The Eden is a valuable part of the local landscape.
It flows from Burnside across the Howe of Fife, through Cupar to Guardbridge, and into the North Sea via the Eden Estuary — a vital conservation area for wading birds, and a natural reserve.
Eden Angling Association believes the financial boost will have a beneficial effect on fishing in the area.
Secretary Ian Young said: "Our association welcomes this major investment by Scottish Water.
"We have been providing trout and salmon fishing to the public for nearly 100 years.
"The Eden Angling Association is concerned not only with the excellent fishing the Eden provides, but also the conservation of the wide variety of wildlife that depend on the river for their habitat.
"Without clean water, the eco-system of the river would be in jeopardy.
"We are sure this investment will enhance the quality of water that is discharged into the Eden."
Improvements will be managed by Scottish Water Solutions, a joint venture partnership of utility companies and contractors established by Scottish Water in order to enhance the efficency of Scotland's water and waste water infrastructure.
Some 2.3 million is being invested in the work at Bowhouse, while 3.2 million was awarded to Cupar sewage treatment works, and 2.25 million has been invested to improve the waste water provision for Guardbridge and neighbouring villages.
These projects have been undertaken by Black and Veatch, while Barhale will conduct the Springfield upgrade, which has been allotted 2.1 million to invest in the Springfield facility.
Derek Ogilvie, Scottish Water's regional manager, said: "We have invested 25.5 million in Fife in 2007-08, and the investment amount will climb to 36.5 million in 2008-09 as more projects come online.
"This steady programme of research, maintenance, upgrading and provision for new developments will ensure that there is a reliable and safe supply of clear, fresh water for generations to come — as well as doing our bit to guarantee a cleaner environment."
