Another St Andrews student dies abroad
ANOTHER St Andrews University student has died suddenly
John Shipley, a second year undergraduate studying economics, died at his home in New York at the age of 19.
The tragedy follows the death of 22-year-old international relations student Jonathan Wookey last week and graduate Steven Sims last month.
John Shipley was a graduate of Saddle River Day School and lived in Montebello, New York.
He had just completed second year and was due to return to St Andrews in late summer to resume his studies here.
Paying tribute, university principal Louise Richardson said: ‘‘He was, by all accounts, a quiet, thoughtful and dedicated student who had a closely knit group of good friends in St Andrews’’
Professor Richardson said many of his friends were planning to travel to New York for his funeral tomorrow morning (Thursday), adding: ‘‘They remember a loyal friend and classmate whom they will miss terribly.
‘‘A resident of New Hall in his first year and latterly of David Russell Apartments, John was studying economics with a view to a career in the financial industry.
‘‘He was a keen supporter of student charity initiatives and had twice taken part in the annual Race to Barcelona.
‘‘I know how much of a shock John’s death has come to his friends and teachers in St Andrews and to our wider university community, already mourning the recent loss of Steven Sims and Jonathan Wookey.
‘‘Our colleagues from Student Services are in touch with John’s family.’’
The funeral will be at St. Anthony’s Church, 36 West Nyack Road, Nanuet, at 11.30 a.m. tomorrow.
Jonathan Wookey died in hospital after suffering head injuries in an accident while holidaying with friends in Cyprus.
Steven Sims, who graduated from St Andrews last year, also died in hospital owing to complications from a rare and previously undiagnosed blood condition.
