John Dobbie - jailed for 15 years

A Kirkcaldy man who inflicted catastrophic injuries on a crying baby he claimed he was “shoogling” has been jailed for 15 years.

John Dobbie fractured the 15-week-old child’s skull and left him blind and brain damaged after repeatedly shaking him and striking his head against a surface when he was left in charge of the tot.

A worker at Victoria Hospital who saw the infant when Dobbie (36) brought him in said: “I have seen a cot death baby that looked better than that little boy did.”

The child, who is now three years-old, will be dependent on full-time care for the rest of his life.

Today (Tuesday), judge Lord Armstrong told Dobbie at the High Court in Edinburgh: “The crime of which you have convicted is marked by its sheer brutality, by its devastating and catastrophic consequences for your victim who was defenceless.

“A crime of this type could not be more repugnant to a civilised society.”

The judge said the baby had suffered a massive skull fracture and extensive internal bleeding following the attack in Overton Mains, Kirkcaldy.

The force necessary to inflict the skull fracture was equivalent to throwing a baby from a fast moving car or from an upper window and haemorrhages to the child’s eyes were consistent with extreme and violent shaking.

“It is difficult to see how your actions, short of murdering him, could have constituted a greater breach of trust,” said the judge.

Detective Inspector John Anderson, who led a Police Scotland enquiry said the investigation had been “protracted and complex” and relied upon multi-agency co-operation.

He said: “The sentence handed to John Dobbie today reflects just how truly a horrendous crime he committed against a defenceless baby.

“I would like to thank all of those who ensured this despicable crime was brought to trial for all of their efforts. As a result, John Dobbie

will now spend several years in prison.

He added:“The horrific injuries the child sustained mean he will live with numerous impairments for the rest of his life and will require

day-to-day care.

“Despite this, John Dobbie has never shown any remorse for his actions, which demonstrates how cold and callous an individual

he is.”
