Burntisland museum and library
PLANS to bring Burntisland’s library, museum and local services centre under one roof are progressing behind the scenes.
Last year Fife Council confirmed the services would be merged into one building as part of its customer management programme, which involves the local authority forming eight main local offices around Fife, complemented by a number of smaller offices and information points in Council buildings such as libraries and other premises.
Diarmuid Cotter, the Council’s customer services manager, said: “Over recent months we have been working with colleagues in the Council and Historic Scotland to establish how best we can refurbish and modernise the building while maintaining its history and integrity.
“We expect to receive the costs of these proposed works over the next few weeks.
“This project is part of a wider Council programme looking at how we deliver local services.
“We know people are changing the way they do business with us and the majority of customers are telling us that they don’t want to visit offices as much.
“In general, we don’t need as many buildings as we have and we’re working through a plan to bring more services together, so that we can sell some property and stop paying unnecessary bills.“
Similar projects have already been successful in Inverkeithing and Methil where library, museum and local services have been brought together.
Mr Cotter said the Council will be talking to customers about the plans as they are developed.
Dorothy Browse, service manager for libraries, arts, museums and archives, added: “While people are accessing council services in different ways, the library service in Burntisland is still a busy and popular venue in the town for people to visit and we hope it would remain so for many years to come.”
