This weekend’s Twilight Walk for our Maggie’s Centre will include at least one four-legged entrant.
For Milo the 11-month-old border collie is joining his owner Sarah Morris (24), from Kirkcaldy in the charity event to raise funds for the cancer caring centre in the grounds of Victoria Hospital.
Sarah, a student at Fife College, has been a regular visitor at the centre’s sessions for teenagers and young people for over a year where she has the chance to meet and socialise with others of a similar age with a cancer diagnosis.
She explained: “I took part in the Twilight Walk last year and met some great people. I really enjoyed it, and I decided to take Milo this year so that he could help me up that hill in Leslie!”
Elspeth Salter, centre manager and clinical psychologist at Maggie’s Fife, said: “Four footed friends of Maggie’s like Milo always make me smile.
“It’s great to see the support of Milo and his mates for the Twilight Walk. Companionship on any challenge in life is so important to us all. It’s what makes Maggie’s so special.”
Also taking part will be Lesley Campbell (52), owner and massage therapist at East Vows Complementary Therapy on Kirkcaldy Esplanade, who is doing the walk for all the people she knows who have used the centre’s services over the years.
“I have done a bit of fundraising for Maggie’s throughout the year because I think it is a brilliant cause. I also wanted to get fit, so by doing this I have managed to combine the two,” she said.
The Twilight Walk is now in its eighth year and takes place at the Lomond Centre, Glenrothes on Saturday, May 31.
Walkers can choose to walk one, five or 10 miles. Registration is from 6.30 p.m. with the walk starting at 7.30 p.m. Entrants registering on the night will have to pay a £10 registration fee as opposed to £7.50 for adults registering in advance. Children are £5 and dogs go free!
Before the walk begins there will be a warm up session conducted by Pam Weeks from Milennium Fitness in Glenrothes.
Tumong Edwards, Maggie’s centre fundraiser, said: “There are usually quite a few dogs taking part and they always liven up the evening - unfortunately they are not very good at the Zumba warm up!”
