Boost for town centre
A CONTRIBUTION of £35,000 to top up a regeneration fund for Leven’s town centre has been agreed.
Local Fife councillors at the recent Levenmouth area committee meeting agreed to dip into the area budget to allow associated upgrading work to take place.
The cash will sit alongside £91,000 already committed to the scheme by the Council’s environmental, planning and protective services (EPPS) section, which has the main responsibility of overseeing the town centre revitalisation.
The refurbishments were considered necessary as Leven’s town centre remained the main shopping area in Levenmouth and the focus of a programme of intervention work which would continue for some years to come.
Its redevelopment was one of the key priorities in both the Levenmouth Plan and the Levenmouth Area Economic Regeneration Action Plan.
Work due to be carried out in the remainder of this financial year included a ‘shop local’ scheme, installation of footfall counters on the High Street, cleaning and refurbishing paved stone surfaces, more painting of street furniture and repairing any trip hazards, and improvements to the Forth Street car park.
In a report to the committee, locality support team leader Stewart Christie said: “This project will make a major contribution towards enhancing the environment along Leven High Street.
“It is an important step along the way to revitalising Leven High Street in particular and the local economy in general.”
It met area budget criteria through a collaboration in funding, physical improvements, a sense of wellbeing and developing civic pride, added Mr Christie.
It also supported economic and environmental priorities within the Levenmouth Plan, as well as education, as the work may also provide training opportunties.
