ADAM Smith College has a new chairman of its board of governors - the third to hold the post this year
On Friday the college announced that Mark Goldsmith had quit the post due to ‘‘outside commitments.’’
He only took over at the helm in February after the college became embroiled in allegations that a bullying culture was allowed to exist - claims which, ultimately, led to the suspension and then resignation and retirement of princpal, Dr Craig Thompson.
Mr Goldsmith, who is general manager of Robbins and Myers Pfaudler/Balfour in Leven was widely praised for steadying the ship as the Scottish Funding Council sent in its own team of investigators,
His open style earned the support of lecturers, management and union leaders and was key to creating a new atmosphere on campus.
Staff say his departure was unexpected, and that they were disappointed to hear he had stood down.
Mr Goldsmith replaced the long-serving Graham Johnstone who stepped down as chairman at the start of the controversy.
Now the college has a third chairman for its board of governors.
In a statement, Ian Harrington, now described as principal of the college - he had been ‘interim principal’ since the departure of Dr Thomson - said the chairman’s resignation was accepted with ‘‘much regret.’’
He added: ‘’Mark has held the post since February, and has helped to lead the college through what has been a very challenging period.’’
Mr Goldsmith has been replaced by Irene Morrison, his current deputy.
She was one of the senior figures who resigned as the board melted down in February when the claims of bullying first surfaced, stating she had lost confidence in the leadership of the board - then run by Mr Johnstone - and that of the college.
She returned recently to her post as vice-chairman.
