DEDICATED East Wemyss man David Robertson is putting himself through gruelling cycling sessions before and after work as he prepares for a 760- mile challenge.

David will be one of 51 cyclists, who all work for British Gas, who’ll be pedalling from Glasgow to Windsor in just nine days to raise cash for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

British Gas has set a fund-raising target of £500,000 for its staff, which will be used for the hospital’s neurological department.

David, a service manager, explained to the Mail the reasons why he was so keen to help out the well-known children’s charity.

He said: “Having a young family, with children aged three years and 10 months, has made committing to the training a real challenge.

“But I can’t wait to get going.

“My wife has been super-understanding and, like me, believes support for Great Ormond Street Hospital is vital if we are to make sure all our children can get the best treatment in future.”

Altogether around 300 people will take part in the challenge, with some only joining for part of the journey.

Kevin Roxburgh, managing director of Scottish Gas, said the organisation wanted to support the work of Great Ormond Street because of the fantastic way it helps children from all corners of the UK.

He added: “There are many keen cyclists at Scottish Gas and as the country going bike mad this summer, with Bradley Wiggins’ sensational win at Tour De France, so we thought the British Gas Bike Ride would be the perfect challenge to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity.”

Tim Johnson, chief executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, said the cash raised by people like David would help fund the development of a new neurological centre at Great Ormond Street.
