Clydesdale shuts doors of ‘unsustainable’ branch
The doors have closed on a century of service by the Clydesdale Bank in Kirkcaldy.
The High Street branch shut yesterday (Wednesday) after being deemed ‘‘unsustainable.’’
It was one of 28 set to close around Scotland between now and the end of the year - Cupar and Kinross are also set to lose their local branches.
The Clydesdale has been part of Kirkcaldy’s High Street for 109 years, and the decision to brand the branch unsustainable disappointed customers and left many business leaders bemused.
A notice stuck to the wall outside confirmed the closure date and removal of the ATM machines, but said these would be moved elsewhere in the town.
Customers have not been told where these will be relocated.
Staff at the branch have been moved to other branches as part of the massive shake-up aimed at saving £5m.
A Clydesdale spokesman said: “A new site has been identified for the two ATM machines but this is still subject to approval – we’ll be able to say more about this at a later date.”
In signs put in the window, staff thanked people for their custom and said they would be missed.
Customers were shocked and saddened to hear of the closure.
Susannah Baxter (43), said: “I’ve been a life long customer of Clydesdale. I read in the paper earlier this year that it was to face closure but I guess I never really thought it would happen; I’m still really shocked.
“What does this mean for the High Street if a bank of this size that has been here this long is closing?”
One, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “I have been a customer at the Clydesdale Bank for many, many years.
“I’ve got to know the staff and have always been 100 per cent happy with the service. Now I am faced with having to switch banks.
‘‘It really saddens me that this has happened.”
Sign says closing ... but it’s moving!
The Kirkcaldy branch of the Officers Club has confirmed it is not closing down - despite the giant sign in its window!
The store in the Mercat Centre is only moving to another unit.
A spokesman said: “We can confirm that the Officers Club in Kirkcaldy is not closing down.
‘‘Full details of the move to another retail unit are still unknown at this time.
“In the meantime, staff will be transfered to other stores.”
