Charity renews plea for golf let during The Open

A ST Andrews-based charity which is offering a house for rent in a prime site during this summer's Open championship, has renewed its appeal for golf fans to come forward.

The house, 'Breakers' on The Scores, is being let out for 12,000 to help raise money for the Maddy Steel Charitable Trust.

The house is ideally placed for people visiting St Andrews for the Open and will be available from July 10-19.

Oliver Williams of letting agents Pagan Osborne, said all money raised will go to the charity.

He said: "It is rare to get a property that has such a feel good factor about it. This is a one in five year opportunity for the charity and we want to help all we can."

The Maddy Steel Trust supports people in the medical profession in their understanding and treatment of babies born with congenital heart defects by funding 'travel' fellowships which take the doctors to centres of excellence in North America.

At present the trust funds one fellowship a year, costing 6000. However, the aim is to build the funds in the trust to not only increase the number of fellowships, but also to ensure that the fund can operate indefinitely.

Michael Steel, one of the trustees, said: "The let during The Open is a means to raise a very healthy sum for the trust and it will help us achieve our goal, which is to build up an endowment to create an annual income.

"We are very hopeful that the charity can increase the number of fellowships over the next few years and that the income from the let will give us a good boost in that direction."
