Christmas festivities need your support!

AN urgent appeal has been issued to Cuparians to help light up the town this Christmas.

Plans are already under way for the 2012 festivities - but it’s feared that unless more people get involved this year’s event could be the last.

The group behind the switch-on event - which this year takes place on a Saturday - have enlisted the help of the creative arts group Cupar Arts in a bid to put on a more dramatic and imaginative show following widespread criticism of last year’s lights.

TREE

A larger Christmas tree is to be donated by the local business organisation ABCD and will be sited in the Cart Haugh instead of outside the Corn Exchange, and a ‘pop up’ ice rink will be installed in Bonnygate car park.

But Cupar Councillor Margaret Kennedy, chair of the Cupar Christmas Lights Group, has warned that the traditional festivities would no longer be sustainable unless volunteers came forward to help fund-raise, plan the event and promote it.

A meeting is to be held in Cupar ‘Y’ this Wednesday, August 29, and she hopes that as many people as possible will come along.

“We’re aware that last year’s event was criticised and we now have some creative people on board who are looking at different ways of displaying the lights,” she said.

“However it is becoming more expensive every year and in its present form we need at least £20,000 to stage it.

CHALLENGE

“Fife Council’s contract with Blachere Illumination comes to an end this year and will have to be re-negotiated, so it is likely to be even more of a challenge.

“I just hope as many people as possible will come along and become part of it, whether it be with ideas, IT skills or just practical help. We’d particularly welcome young people as it would be good to get their input.”

Fife Council contributes £6000 to the cost of the lights, with money for associated festivities having to be found through grant or fund-raising activities.

n Wednesday’s meeting will take place at 7pm in Cupar ‘Y’. For more information, contact Councillor Kennedy on 07815 846420.
