The woman is winched to safety off the beach

two people were rescued by helicopter after accidents at beaches in and around Kinghorn over the past eight days.

In the first incident a 60-year-old Kirkcaldy woman had to be airlifted to hospital after slipping on the Fife Coastal Path between Kirkcaldy and Kinghorn last Wednesday afternoon and falling on to the rocky beach below.

And in the second a 30-year-old man from Edinburgh was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by helicopter after he injured his back while kite-surfing on a windy section of Pettycur Beach at Kinghorn on Saturday.

Kinghorn’s lifeboat crew were on a training exercise in Burntisland harbour when they were requested to help rescue the fallen walker on the beach between Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy around 4.00 p.m. last Wednesday.

Swam

The volunteer crew were on scene five minutes after receiving the call from the Coastguard, and two members with first aid training swam ashore to provide assistance.

Joanne Wibberley, helmsman explained: “They went ashore with first aid equipment to attend to the casualty.

“The lady had fallen in a remote location on the beach near Abden Home, and it was understood she had a suspected broken ankle.

“The two crew found the casualty and were met by Coastguard rescue team and ambulance personnel who provided medical assistance.

Difficult

“It was deemed too difficult to remove the woman by foot, and a Royal Navy rescue helicopter from Prestwick was sent to the scene.

“The helicopter arrived around 40 minutes later and winched the lady from the scene to an awaiting ambulance at Seafield. ‘‘

In the kite-surfing accident the man was released from hospital the same afternoon after receiving treatment at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
