College u-turn saves theatre arts in Kirkcaldy

Staff and students were delighted to learn that its Theatre Arts courses are here to stay in a decision announced by the college this week.
The popular range of courses, which have helped nurture the talents of hundreds of ambitious actors over the years, including Dougray Scott, Ewan McGregor and Shirley Henderson, faced a reduction in provision last year as a result of an internal curriculum review.
However senior managers, along with the college’s Board of Directors, have since investigated the decision process and overturned the original curriculum review outcome.
Ian Harrington, interim college principal, says he is positive about the future of theatre arts.
“We have revisited the decisions made last year and as a result decided to formally lift any uncertainty around the continuation of our Theatre Arts courses,” he said.
“I would like to commend our staff and students who together have continued to promote and develop this rich and vibrant subject area and achieved fantastic results despite the uncertainty.”
Mark Goldsmith, chairman of the college’s board of governors, added: “Theatre Arts has played a significant part in the success of Adam Smith College for many years and draws hundreds of students from Fife and beyond who go on to a wide range of great career opportunities. I am delighted that we have been able to correct what has gone before and make the right decision.
“The immediate future is now positive, however, just like every other course area in every college in Scotland, we face challenges with budget cuts and changes as a result of regionalisation. We are ready for these challenges and confident that Theatre Arts will continue on in Kirkcaldy for many years to come.”
The welcomed announcement was made as students from the musical theatre courses completed their studies and took part in the last performance of the year, Sweeney Todd, at the College’s St Brycedale Campus, Kirkcaldy.
A statement from the college’s theatre arts staff, said: “This is really good news – we can now move forward positively as part of the Creative Arts Department to further develop our provision for our students, keeping in mind the future challenges that regionalisation may bring.”
