Community stunned by 18-year-old’s death
Jefferson Kettles was a skillful footballer
A STRETCH of main road outside Cupar has claimed its fourth life in six years with the death on Monday of 18-year-old Jefferson Kettles from Falkland.
He was driving a Peugeot 206 on the A91 between Cupar and Hangman’s Lane when it was involved in a head-on collision with a Peugeot 207, being driven by a 51-year-old woman.
She was treated at the scene before being taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she remained before being discharged on Wednesday.
The accident, which happened just before eight in the morning, resulted in the closure of the road out of Cupar for several hours while police carried out investigations.
Jefferson’s parents, Bert and Wilma, issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing their love for their son.
“Jefferson was a much liked, typical teenager. He loved life, was loved by everyone who knew him and was a great fun-loving lad.
“We can’t believe we won’t see him again. We love you Jefferson.”
Jefferson worked with precision engineers G. S. Brown in Ladybank where he joined as a trainee last September.
Co-director Des Brown said everyone at the company was “stunned” by the news of Jefferson’s death.
“It is so sad to see a young, popular guy, full of promise and who fitted in so well here, lose his life in such a tragic way.
“There has been a stunned silence throughout the workforce – it’s really hard to express in words everyone’s sorrow.”
A former pupil at Bell Baxter High School, Cupar, Jefferson was a keen footballer and played rugby in his younger years.
On Monday night, a number of friends gathered in the Stag Inn, Falkland, to pay tribute to the popular local teenager.
A number of Facebook messages were also posted by former classmates and friends.
Eleven years ago, an AA survey named the A91 between Milnathort and St Andrews as one of the most dangerous roads in Britain.
Last May, a 66-year-old man died in a collision near Hangman’s Lane and, in 2008, a 17-year-old passenger from Springfield was killed near the same spot.
A year earlier, a motorcyclist from Dundee lost his life on the road at the outskirts of Cupar.
Fife Police are appealing for witnesses to Monday’s accident and will be sending a report to the Procurator Fiscal.
Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: “This is a tragic loss for this family and I appeal for anyone who may have information about this accident to contact the police.
“Anyone who may have seen the cars involved just before the accident on the A91 on Monday morning should contact us on 0845 6005702.”
