A MOVE by Fife Council to ensure that companies in the Kingdom bid for the millions of pounds worth of contracts placed by the local authority has been welcomed by MP Lindsay Roy.
During 2011/12, less than a fifth of the 220 contracts worth a total of £52 million issued by the council went to Fife-based firms.
That figure was well down on the previous year and now council officers are trying to find out if local companies are actually applying for the work and, if they are, why they are failing to get it.
Along with other councils, Fife has to award contracts on the basis of best value for money and invites tenders through a national website.
It also offers advice on how to submit competitive tenders.
Said Lindsay Roy, “This is a timely initiative by council leader Alex Rowley and I hope it brings an improvement in business for Fife firms.
“The council awards all sorts of contracts every year and I urge local businesses to ensure they know how to place competitive bids.”
