Contract reflects continuing faith in BiFab skills
HIGH regard for Burntisland Fabrications Ltd’s industry expertise is reflected by its second major contract award within a week.
Confirmation has come that it had received a frame contract from GDF SUEZ E&P UK Ltd for the Cygnus project, off the Norfolk and Lincolnshire coasts.
The order covers the award of the design, procurement and construction of four jackets, complete with piles, with a total weight of around 8000 tonnes and an estimated value of £47 million.
Discussions are continuing over possible further work, under a frame agreement for the delivery of a 3500-tonne accommodation and utilities module.
BiFab’s three manufacturing facilities at Methil, Burntisland and Arnish will be involved, with the projected expected to create 100 new jobs.
The contract will be delivered in phases between April 2014 and April 2015.
As with the Premier Oil contract – announced last week with a visit to Methil by Prime Minister David Cameron – BiFab believed a commercially attractive bid, along with its ability to deliver a quality product, on schedule and with a good safety culture, had helped secure the latest order.
BiFab’s managing director, John Robertson, said: “We look forward to working with the GDF SUEZ team, delivering this project safely and on schedule.
“This latest success enhances BiFab’s growing reputation as a major manufacturer of topsides and jackets for the North Sea.”
The award also meant good news for BiFab’s commitment to apprenctices.
“Recognising the future demands for a highly skilled workforce, BiFab introduced an apprenticeship training scheme in 2007, with the aim of having a rolling programme of 50 apprentices in the scheme at any one time,” added Mr Robertson.
“The award of this project will allow us to strengthen this programme.”
BiFab acknowledged that Government support had been key in the award of the contract, by encouraging UK content wherever possible.
