Council tax money on the up
MORE money was collected from council tax in Fife last year than in the previous year.
Just under £125 million, or 95.2 per cent, of the £131 million due to the local authority was collected, an increase of 1.4 per cent.
The Scottish average is 94.9 per cent.
The local authority uses a variety of activities to ensure the maximum amount of income due to the council is collected in the year it’s due, for example, pro-actively contacting customers before they fall into arrears, making more services available online and encouraging more people to pay by Direct Debit.
Last year £10,000 was saved on paper reminders by using text and voice message reminders instead and 104,000 households paid by direct debit.
Cllr Dave Dempsey, chair of the environment, finance and corporate services scrutiny committee, said: “Despite the current economic climate the council has done very well to increase the amount it’s collected and to reduce its operating costs.”
