Councillor hits out at ‘slur’

The SNP leader of Fife Council has condemned a UK economics magazine for an “ignorant and nasty” slur on the ancient city of Dunfermline.
Councillor Peter Grant said the front cover of the recent “Economist” magazine poked fun at the names of several well known places in Scotland.
He said the magazine had attempted to talk down the economic prospects of an independent Scotland by publishing a map with place names changed to suggest the whole country was living in dire poverty. Dunfermline, birth place of Andrew Carnegie and home to the biggest inward investment Scotland has seen in decades, was described as “Dunearnin’”.
Councillor Grant said: “The great city of Dunfermline is rightly proud of its history as Scotland’s ancient capital. It was the home of perhaps our greatest ever monarch, the birthplace of one of the greatest philanthropists of all time, and is the last resting place of the king who ensured the survival of the Scottish nation.
“Today Dunfermline is finding a new confidence as one of the most exciting cultural centres in Scotland. It’s home to the biggest inward investment project Scotland has seen in decades, the new Amazon facility that will provide about 2,000 jobs when it reaches its peak.
“Amazon chose Dunfermline ahead of alternative locations all over Europe because of the quality of Fife’s workforce and the “can do” attitude of both local and national government.
“They came here in the full knowledge that Scotland might be independent in a few years time. Their massive facility in Dunfermline is, quite literally, concrete proof that investors and employers are perfectly relaxed about the prospect of independence.
