two Kirkcaldy hip-hop crews are hoping to dance their way to success in the regional finals of a television dance-off.

Unik and Bratz, both based at the NRG Dance Studio in Kirkcaldy’s Mitchelston Industrial Estate, have already wowed judges at initial auditions in Edinburgh to get through to the Scottish regional finals of ‘Britain Does Variety’ for the Sky Showcase television channel.

And both are currently rehearsing hard to brush up their popping, crumping and flipping skills in time for their regionals performances at Edinburgh’s MGA Academy on April 22.

Confident

Dance teacher Nikki McAndrew (23), who has run NRG for almost five years and is a member of Unik, is confident that both teams will do well in their performances.

“We have all been working really hard to perfect our routines and moves,” she said.

‘’If we keep improving there is no reason why both crews couldn’t make it through to the overall finals in London.’’

Unik, whose members are aged between 12-24, have been winning lots of trophies at dance competitions around the UK over the past few years, while Bratz, aged 5-10 years, were only formed a year ago, but are already showing promise.

Demand

“We started out in Templehall Community Centre and the classes really took off to the point where we had to get a place of our own to cope with the demand,” explained Nikki, who did an HND in dance at Telford College before starting to teach in Kirkcaldy.

And dance is certainly in Nikki’s blood, with both her mum and dad award-winning hip-hop champions.

“The crew members from both Unik and Bratz are chosen from the best of the dance school pupils, and as well as talent they have to show real dedication and commitment to their dancing.

“We are really excited about this challenge and are all working extremely hard to secure a place in the finals,” added Nikki.
