CUPAR added to its ever-expanding list of horticultural achievements by scooping a gold medal in this year’s Beautiful Scotland competition.

At an awards ceremony in Motherwell on Tuesday evening, Cupar in Bloom was also given the Wright Sustainability Award and was singled out for praise after receiving the third highest total of marks in the country.

Mary Law, chair of Cupar in Bloom, said she was delighted by the group’s success.

PROUD

She told the Fife Herald: “We are really proud of what we’ve achieved and it’s all down to our volunteers who, despite the weather, have worked very hard.”

The judges were particularly impressed with the way Cupar in Bloom has worked with local schools to promote environmental intiatives such as the ‘bugs and beasties’ habitat at Tarvit Ponds.

Also praised were an eco-activities day involving Bell Baxter High School, Kilmaron School and Elmwood College, and the recycling of begonias.

Mrs Law added: “We have done a lot of work with the youngsters because they are our future leaders, and we’re pleased the judges have reflected this partnership.”

Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Beautiful Scotland, a campaign run by Keep Scotland Beautiful, celebrates the work of communities, from whole cities to villages, who pull together to improve and enhance their local areas.

“Through floral enhancement, community participation and taking responsibility for tackling the criminal activity of littering and dog fouling, these Beautiful Scotland groups make a massive difference to Fife and our country.

“These awards go some way to recognising the endless hours which volunteers and local authorities put in throughout the year to ensure that visitors and local community members are able to enjoy clean, green and sustainable surroundings.”
